Although winter had officially ended, if you looked around Dewpoint Town on this particular day you certainly wouldn't have known that. As he walked around on the outskirts of the town, there wasn't a patch of grass as far as the eye could see. Many of the houses, which looked worn down and decayed, had at least a foot of snow on their roofs. Devin wasn't sure if he was the only one around, but it certainly seemed that way given the weather and the overall view of the area.

Not too far away a small Snorunt was walking by with a rather dried up, dead looking leaf it had found. It paid no attention to the Glalie it was walking past. The Glalie seemed to notice it, however, as the ice type quickly froze the air around it’s body and covered it’s self in layer of ice. Jumping from tree to tree, to roof to roof was a small Emolga. It appeared to be trying to keep its self warm. A bit off to the side was a rather oddly coloured Minun making what looked like a snowball. Unlike most minum’s normal blue colouring this minun had aqua markings. It’s fur seemed to shimmer a lot more than most as well.

As Devin was walking by he noticed a Glalie and a Snorunt close by. For some reason, the Glalie was freezing the air around itself as the Snorunt was walking by for some odd reason, perhaps this Glalie was intimidated by anything that approached it in some certain way. Deciding to investigate this, Devin moved toward the Glalie slowly, while keeping an eye on the Snorunt off to the side.

The Snorunt made her way towards a pair of steps leading up to a building. Soon enough she disappeared under the steps with the dead leaf she had found. As the Snorunt vanished the Glalie shook himself, letting the ice he had created shatter. It wasn’t until the most of the ice had fallen to the ground that the Glalie noticed the human slowly drawing closer to him. Once again he suddenly froze the air around him and created yet another ice shield around his body. It seemed he was a rather timid pokemon.

Much to Devin's surprise, the Glalie did not attack him as he got closer, instead, the protective ice shield around it shattered, and apparently upon noticing Devin, the Glalie created another ice shield around itself. This only seemed to increase the likelihood that the Glalie was somewhat nervous and shy. In an attempt to help the Glalie relax, Devin said to it, "You don't need to be afraid Glalie, I won't hurt you."

The Glalie looked up at Devin when he told her she didn’t need to be afraid. For a moment she almost considered shattering her shield again but than suddenly changed her mind when the Snorunt climbed back out from under the steps. Even though the Glalie was scared of the Snorunt, the Snorunt wasn’t actually wasn’t paying any attention to it at all. She wasn’t even paying attention to the human. She seemed to be too busy looking for something. Most likely another leaf.

Devin decided to ignore the Snorunt for the time being and focus on the Glalie for the time being, as it still refused to shatter its ice shield and still seemed quite afraid. Not wanting to frighten it any further, Devin didn't take another step towards it and tried to communicate with it in a friendly tone by saying, "Why are you so afraid Glalie, are you always like this?"

The Glalie blinked a couple times when Devin asked his question. Why? Well there were many reasons why but she didn’t know if she wanted to tell the human. Was she always like this? Well she could answer that question first. So, with a bit of hesitation she finally nodded to Devin to confirm that she was indeed always afraid. “Lie gal gal.” She finally blurted out afterwards, her voice very low and quiet. She had said that she found it rather scary being away from her mother.

Glalie's tone of voice indicated that part of its fear was because of a previous companionship. Devin couldn't understand more than that aspect of Glalie's speech, but perhaps something, or someone had always looked out for it, and Glalie didn't feel comfortable away from whatever provided it companionship or protection. Perhaps Devin could help this Glalie out and provide it some security that it desired. He said to the ice-type, "Glalie, If you want I can look after you. I can help you feel less scared about life if you want me to."

Help her feel… less scared? He would do that for her? But he… he didn’t even know her. They had just met! Why would he be willing to do such a thing for her? Was he really that kind? He didn’t seem that scary… maybe she could…
Very slowly she shook herself, letting the ice barrier crack and crumble to the ground. “Gla Gl lie?” She asked. She wanted to know why he wanted to protect her.

The uncertainty in Glalie's voice indicated that it was confused as to what possible reason Devin had for trying to help it. In Devin's case the answer was simple, it was his job to help out any Pokemon that he came across that was experiencing any sort of pain, both physical and emotional. It was just a matter of putting those thoughts into words so Devin said to the Ice-type, "Because it's my job to help keep Pokemon safe. It's what I do for a living."

Glalie blinked for a moment a little confused by the man’s words. She hadn’t known there were people who had the job of taking care of pokemon. Her mother had always protected her from human’s as she had some were dangerous. Now she had to live and defend for herself but it was so scary being on your own. Perhaps, if it was this man’s job then she wouldn’t have to be alone anymore. She would like that very much. But then… how did she know he wasn’t trying to trick her? Maybe if she…
Very slowly the Glalie moved a bit closer to Devin and sniffed him. He didn’t smell mean. Them suddenly she moved even closer, went to poke him before running a few feet away again. Once she believed she was far enough away she turned around again to check what the human would do.

Devin was all to aware that anyone who was naturally timid was often quite slow to trust. Such was the case here, as Glalie slowly poked him and the floated quickly away. This was an obvious test of provocation to see what Devin's reaction would be to the smallest of stimuli. Devin was well aware of this and did not move an inch in response, and said to the Glalie, "I can see that you aren't quick to trust Glalie, but I'm willing to stand here all day if I can get you to trust me. That's how much I want to help you."

Once again the Glalie blinked at the man’s words. He hadn’t gotten mad at her! He was still offering to… “Glalie?” she asked suddenly. It had been a simple and light hearted question that meant only one thing. Friends?

True to his word, Devin continued to stand very still, not moving at all and not expressing any sort of disappointment, or anger on his face. He said he was willing to stand out all day in order to earn the Glalie's trust and he meant it. One thing that he did do was casually reach into his backpack, and took out a Great Ball. He began to fiddle around with it in his hand, but did nothing more with it. He wouldn't do anything else with it until he earned the Glalie's trust.

The Glalie waited to see if he would respond to her question but it seemed the human hadn’t understood it. Perhaps he couldn’t understand pokemon language. That would make sense as people were very different than pokemon in many ways.
When Devin pulled out the great ball, Glalie found herself feeling a bit curious as to what exactly he had. She had never seen a pokeball before. Little by little she drew a bit closer to him, trying to get a peek at the item he held.

Devin suddenly noticed the Glalie move closer to him. However, he did not move in response to what the Glalie was doing, knowing that the Glalie had reacted negatively to even the slightest of movements earlier. In an attempt to put the Glalie at more ease somewhat he said to it, "I'd like to be your friend, if you'll let me."

A sudden smile grew on the young pokemon’s face when Devin claimed he would like to be her friend. “Glalie!” She called out, saying the word ‘friend’ once again. With that she nodded happily before remembering that she had been curious about the item Devin held. Slowly her smile faded a little and she looked the Greatball.

Devin was happy that the Glalie appeared to initially respond well to his offer of friendship. However he noticed that the Glalie appeared to be somewhat curious about the Great Ball that he was holding in his hand. He held it up a little bit so that it was now at the level of his chest and said to Glalie, "You want to look at this thing? Okay, you can look at it all you want."

The Glalie’s eyes widened a bit with amazement as Devin held the Great Ball up a bit so she could get a better look. She couldn’t help but begin to examine it, looking at if from one side, than the other, from above and below. She knew she was letting her guard down but that ok. This man seemed nice and well, he had offered to be her friend. Friend’s weren’t scary, they were nice.
In the same motion she had used to tap Devin before, she suddenly stuck out her tongue and licked the Great Ball before moving back a little. After doing so a somewhat disgusted look crossed her face as she realized the Great Ball didn’t taste so good. It defiantly wasn’t something she could eat.
