I'm simply do this on paint. Nothing fancy at all. Say those words again and I'll slap you. Paint is the BEST program when it comes to spriting, and the simpler your tools the better! I run on Windows 7 and would kill to have XP's Paint back. X3 Do NOT diss Paint. First of all, never save as .jpg. Also, never save as .bmp unless you're using a program called Giffy to convert, as uploading a .bmp on most things will turn it INTO a .jpg. That results in the corruption you see. To preserve colors properly with a background, save as .png. To REMOVE the background, the simplest tool you can use is probably Giffy- a very small, light program made to do little BUT taking the backgrounds off images. In order to use Giffy, download it from that link of course. Then make your sprites in paint as usual. When you're done, make all your background one color, and make sure it's the ONLY thing that color. For this reason, I recommend a color other than white. Of course, you can make eyes and such really light gray, but it just helps in making sure you didn't forget anything if it's a drastic difference. Anyway, save that image as .bmp, and open Giffy. Click the Load BMP button and select your new sprite. Click the box next to Transparent, and make sure the color is set to the background. Then just hit Save GIF, and you have a pretty transparentized sprite. ^^ As to actual technique tips, look at your pink Flaafmeleon there. You have a dark color as the highlight and light as the shadow. You need to make sure your highlights are light and your shadows are dark, or it won't turn out right. Similar to Caden, you seem to need to slow down and just take a little more time ironing out details, such as the odd squiggle k in the Raileaf's tail near the ear, which would take only a few seconds to straighten out, or the random few pixels hanging down from it atop the first bend. A few places, like below the Raileaf's other ear or on top of the Charmeleon horn lack outline, though it's not too bad. I do commend your light proper-colored outlines (you'd be amazed how many newbies forget to recolor the outline at all) in places, like around the Flaaffy head, though you might make them just a touch darker. X3 I got in a phase once of doing similar light lines once, but looking back when placed on dark or bright backgrounds I can see where it can look a bit odd, so it's really better to keep a moderately dark-ish outline or go lineless completely (and the latter is HARD and requires CRAZY shading to look right xP). x3 Finally, just your names. *SHOT* The reason I say Raileaf rather than Raion, is because if you refer to it in conversation no one will have a clue what Raion is. That 'on' could refer to Vaporeon, Joleteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Porygon, Rhydon, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Charmeleon, Magneton, Typhlosion, Zigzagoon, Silcoon, Cascoon, Aron, Lairon, Aggron, Kecleon, Bagon, Shelgon, Empoleon, Gastrodon, Hippowdon, Finneon, Lumineon, Drapion, Drifloon, Duosion, or Druddigon. xP In a less extreme example, what if I said "Houndsol"? Am I talking about Houndour or Houndoom? x3 That's why Abdour there is better. :3 Absdour and Absodour would be equally good, so it's not an exact science; just try to get the most distinctive parts so people can easily guess it. ^^ x3 Overall, not a bad start. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll get better in no time.
