You must have a link to your character's profile in your signature. You also need to specify what color you will be RPing them in. You may have a list of that character's pokemon if you wish but it is not mandatory. You may also have a trainer card if you want.
You are allowed to advertise in your signature but don't have obnoxious banners that stretch the board. A simple button will do, or a small banner. If people abuse this I might revoke this and ban any advertising.
Quotes, personalization, etc are fine but don't overdue it. Keep things tidy and neat and as small as possible.

General Pokemon Rules All generations of Pokemon are allowed here, and every species can be encountered in the wild in at least one area. This excludes only Legendary Pokemon, which have not appeared in Eran history for decades. 1. Starters - Each character may start with up to three Pokemon: you may have less, but not more. These may or may not play into their history, though we highly prefer to know how at least the very first was obtained.
- Only one of the three pokemon may be evolved, either partially or fully. Pokemon who only have one stage, such as Absol, do not count as evolved. In other words:
- YES: Bagon, Pidgey, and Rapidash. Only one is evolved.
- YES: Salamence, Pidgey, and Stantler. Only one is evolved.
- NO: Salamence, Pidgeotto, and Stantler. Both Salamence and Pidgeotto are evolved.
- NO: Shelgon, Pidgeotto, and Stantler. Even though Shelgon can still evolve again, it and Pidgeotto are still both evolved.
- You cannot start out with a fossil pokemon (i.e.- Aerodactyl, Lileep, etc.) whether evolved or not.
- You must have a very, very good reason to start with a Shadow Pokemon, and only Ethereal can approve this.
2. Gender Ratios- Here on VC, we find it a little bit silly that seven of every eight Eevee are male, etc. Therefore, all Pokemon which do include both genders have a 50/50 gender ratio, typically. Occasionally, in 3-to-1 cases where mods feel it makes sense (like Gothita), they might still roll those odds, but this is purely at the mod's discretion and should pretty well never apply to those cases like starters and Eons that are 7-to-1.
- All genderless Pokemon are also gendered here, with a 50/50 ratio, excluding only Ditto and Unown.
Ditto could be considered either genderless or hermaphroditic, though individuals may or may not "choose" a gender (even if they do, they are still capable of transformation into both). Ditto reproduce through a process similar to mitosis when they are very old; the original Ditto "dies" in this process to create two offspring.
Unown, on the other hand, is truly genderless, and does not appear to reproduce, but rather come out of the endless horrifying hive-minded horde that resides in their home dimension; whether or not something is creating more within that dimension or if they were simply all created at once and have always been around is (no pun intended) unknown.
- Furthermore, we see little reason why certain species are only one gender. Yes, those with counterparts, like the fireflies, make sense. Jynx makes sense. But Braviary? Petilil? Really, Gardevoir and Gothitelle have males, so why not Lilligant? As such, the following previously-single-gendered Pokemon will on VC have a 75%/25% or 3-to-1 ratio, with the larger percentage being whatever the species previously was exclusively. (Gender differences may be noted, or added at a later time.)
Tyrogue and the Hitmon-line Happiny, Chansey, and Blissey (males have no pouch/egg; a marking may be added later) Jollaby and Kangaskhan (male Kangas have no pouch) Petilil and Lilligant Rufflet and Braviary Vullaby and Mandibuzz Smoochum/Jynx, Vespiquen, and Froslass will continue to be exclusively female, while Gallade, Sawk, and Throh will continue to be exclusively male. 3. Encounters 4. Battle and Stats moves they could learn via level-up, TM/HM, tutor, egg moves, or from the Dream World in any generation, in its current or a previous stage. Special moves, like Pikachu's Surf, etc, may only be known if a mod has specified it during the encounter or by playing out slowly teaching the Pokemon to do so in a mod thread. References like Serebii and Veekun are life-savers in this area. Note that players are not required to have their Pokemon know all moves if they prefer a slower learning process; they're just allowed to have them 'learn' any moves whenever they like. :3 Natures do not have the same effects as they do in the games; rather, Pokemon just have personalities like people. Abilities do come into play here, and each Pokemon can only have one. Stats are considered, of course, though usually not counted exactly. One wouldn't expect a Happiny to take a hit as well as Shuckle or a Ralts to punch as hard as Machamp, after all. (It's worth noting that a few number-crunching mods actually do prefer to use stats more directly, counting as if all Pokemon were equal level and greatly boosting HP to accommodate for anime-style resilience, but most mods just use a rough idea.)[/ul] 5. Our One Fakemon~ No other unofficial Pokemon may be used, nor are we interested in approving any others.[/ul]

General - Quality
Vicious Circle is an intermediate-advanced RP, which means that you should have at least fairly good spelling and grammar. Everyone has a type-o now and then, but no chatspeak or txt talk. We understand quality is not equal to quantity, and as such have no word limit. We'd like to ask at least one to two healthy paragraph or more as a norm, but we won't reprimand occasionally posting just one small one (for example, in fast-paced battles or conversations).
While we try to be pretty open about what we allow, "intermediate-advanced" is a goal, not just a tag we throw on to look cool. As a general rule, the vast majority of writers tend to be a little bare on details starting out. This is something everyone should strive to work on throughout their writing careers... but it is possible to go overboard. As such, here are a few examples of writing the same thing with different levels of detail. For this, I'm going to be using a post without dialogue, and with very few real actions, as to bring maximum attention to the level of detail. The setting here is a bartender named Lyall's birthday, which he's celebrating in his bar with a number of friends. He's mentioned he can't remember what he's done when he gets too drunk, and one friend, Iris, has mentioned she isn't one to judge. This sparks some of the others asking Iris to elaborate, including another char, Alex, to mention that some of them know Alex's worst drinking story in hopes that will extra-prod Iris. The examples come from Delilah, who is a regular customer but not well-liked by Lyall's other friends. Delilah really wanted to know too, but she didn't think Iris would tell her if she asked and pretended not to pay attention instead.
-------------
This.. technically gets the point across, and we won't actually hunt you down and slay you if you make a very very verrrry rare post like this, but really? Certainly anyone can come up with more detail than that. Delilah was curious both of Alex's story could have been and why Iris couldn't judge Lyall. However, she was sure neither was going to give up that information easily, especially if she was the one asking. Instead, she kept sipping her drink and turned to scope out the other party guests- mostly members of Lyall's gang, the Black Knights. Mmmm, knights~ Some of them really were wonderful eye candy, to a point Lilah almost forgot she was eavesdropping. She made sure to keep an ear firmly on Iris and the others, though. She didn't want to miss whatever was said.
-------------
Short and sweet, but not bad. If this is your normal level, you're doing just fine, and while all of us can always stand improvement, anyone who tells you this writing is 'bad' is probably a borderline to outright elitist jerk. It gets the point across with a little extra feeling. In comparison to the other, it tells us what she's doing to pretend not to pay attention, etc. Down on her end of the bar, Delilah was all-around curious. Naturally, she didn't know whatever it was Alex may have been referring to, though she probably just would have laughed had she known his 'worst' story was something so in-her-opinion-minor. But she highly doubted he was going to share with everyone. In addition, it certainly sounded interesting to find out a little more about her least-favorite bartender. (All right, so the woman served perfectly good drinks (even if Lilah was sure she would have spit in them if she didn't watch closely enough), and she'd seen some pretty shitty bartenders whose establishments she'd never visit again; but among the few places where she might be considered a regular, Iris was the one she disliked most as a person, and the parallel amused her with Lyall being her favorite and Iris her least favorite, so she was going to keep thinking of her as such.)
Of course, she was certain if she chimed in on the matter, it would absolutely close all negotiations on the subject for everyone. Instead, then, she continued sipping her drink, turning around some in her barstool and making like she had ceased paying attention to them entirely to instead scope out what Black Knights had arrived. ...Not that she wasn't doing the latter, actually. My my my, Lyall's gang certainly attracts some... 'interesting' company... Any time she'd ever seen them- never so many at once- she always wondered which had once been knights and which were picked up along the way. In all honesty, she really didn't think she could have ever made it with a real knight. (Even lesser military was probably too strict and upright for her tastes, and just look how much 'progress' she'd made with her little knight friend out East; she couldn't even bring herself to try seriously with the poor naive boy.) But damn if the whole 'knight in shining armor' cliche wasn't still massively appealing... and if the training involved hadn't paid off. |3 Muurrrrrr, some of these boys~<3
Delilah nearly got herself so distracted with these thoughts she forgot she was eavesdropping. Nearly, but not quite, and once she realized how close she was getting, she did start trying to divide her focus a little more evenly. She didn't want to miss story-time. Hehe.
-------------
A very in-depth account. If this is your normal level, you could probably even stand to tone down some posts now and then to give your fellow roleplayers a little break. That said, it's at a nice level that gives a lot of detail without too much unnecessary filler. Perhaps not all of it is the most relevant information, but it all relates to the situation in some way or other. It also (not that you'd catch this if you're a new member reading this, but that's why I'm explaining :3) has a few light references to other topics and RP events, which, in addition to fleshing out this post on its own, gives a sense of continuity to the RP as a whole and can be especially amusing for other players who are involved in or have read one or more of the things referenced. It also goes a little deeper into the character's mindset, and gives more a feeling for who she is than just what she's doing. Down on her end of the bar, Delilah's purple and gold kaleidoscope orbs lit with the intensity of her curiosity, a sharp contrast to their general state in her dark face. Naturally, she hadn't the faintest idea what tale of embarrassing proportions to which the brown-haired young man may have been referring, though in all honesty she probably would have let out a laugh of sheer amusement had she known his 'worst' story was something which she would consider so very minor herself. All the same, she highly doubted he was going to share with everyone.
Putting thoughts of the boy aside for now, then, she returned her focus to the purple-haired woman whose appearance rivaled Delilah's own. She had to admit, it certainly did sound incredibly interesting to learn more about her least-favorite bartender. (All right, so the woman served perfectly good drinks (even if Lilah was sure she would have spit in them if she didn't watch closely enough), and she'd seen some pretty shitty bartenders whose establishments she'd never visit again; but among the few places where she might be considered a regular, this judgmental hypocrite that was known to her friends as Iris was the one she disliked most as a person, and the parallel amused her with Lyall being her favorite and Iris her least favorite, so she was going to keep thinking of her as such.)
Of course, she was certain if she chimed in on the matter, it would absolutely close all negotiations on the subject for everyone. Instead, then, she simply continued slowly sipping her delectable drink, savoring each sip like it was liquid ambrosia. Carefully turning in her barstool to just the right angle, she feigned as if she had ceased paying attention to them entirely; her hand idly moved to play with her long dark luscious curls. Instead, her brilliant eyes scanned the room, carefully examining all the other arrivals thus far- Black Knights for the most part. It wasn't really that she wasn't honestly watching them, of course; she merely kept her attention divided. My my my, Lyall's gang certainly attracts some... 'interesting' company... She had seen a number of his Knights before, though never so many at once, and each time that she did, she always wondered which had once been true knights- defenders or Era under the now-fallen monarchy- and which were picked up along the way.
In all honesty, she really didn't think she could have ever succeeded in a true relationship with a real knight- not unless it was the sort of relationship in which she was only using her hapless prey, and even that would be questionable depending on the person. (Even lesser military was probably too strict and upright for her tastes, as Delilah was always one to veer more toward the chaotic side of life. Besides that, one could just look how much 'progress' she'd made with her little knight friend out East; she couldn't even bring herself to try seriously with the poor naive boy, for that golden seraph of light was far too pure. Even she who had tainted so many could not bring herself to snuff that brilliant glow, which symbolized in a way all that remained pure and good in this dark world.) For all her questionable stand on the subject, though, the whole 'knight in shining armor' cliche was still a guilty pleasure of which she could not seem to rid herself. To be fair, the training involved had definitely paid off, and the rock-hard bodies some of them still maintained did not help to dissuade her interest.
Hehe.

Will expand this over-the-top a little more later and then add stuff. - Time
We run on liquid time in real time. This means if it's Christmas in real life, it's Christmas on the board; if it's summer, it's summer, and so-on. You may RP topics set some time in the past, but no more than two weeks in the future (to get a head start on a large holiday topic or the like). If you're going too far back, we ask you set it up present day and proceed to flashback, though.
You may have as many topics as you'd like with a single character, just so long as you can keep up with them, and as long as you understand having too many solo mod topics will probably slow down reply time for those.
- Patience
Building from that, whether RPing with a mod and/or other players, always be considerate. You may politely bring their attention to the need for reply, but you may not pester them repeatedly and/or be rude about it. Everyone has a life. (Some more than others, but still.)
- Rating
Once again, we are a PG-13 board. We allow for (but in no way require, of course, if such things aren't your cup of tea) mature and realistic situations including heavy romance, strong violence, and dark themes, etc, so long as things don't quite cross into Mature territory. This means your characters may have sex, but you may not give any details; blood can be present, but no deep descriptions of gushing fountains/organs/etc. Drug use is allowed, but in no way are drugs to be treated positively; that is, your character might think they're great, but be sure it's clear you don't agree. Overall, if you're uncertain about something you'd like to do, just ask.
- Humans Only
We are a human RP, meaning no vampires, werewolves, demons, angels, zombies, Pokemorphs, or wild Pokemon, etc. You may, and are in fact encouraged to, RP your character's Pokemon in fair detail, however. It is up to you whether or not a Pokemon can speak Human, or if mentally gifted Pokemon are capable of Telepathy. Very rarely, a human may also speak Pokemon, though with this it's all or nothing, whether they're fluent or can only pick up bits and pieces.
- Distinguishing Characters
We'd like to ask you to distinguish your character's speech in some way when roleplaying, either via bolding or a certain color. Color specifically is only required if you have more than one character in the same topic, however, as it just helps greatly in keeping things clear. Post tables are popular as well; if you like them but don't know how to make them, there are a few members who would be willing to help in the Creativity board, so you may consider that. :3

General Rules - Show Respect
Whether staff, member, or guest, please treat everyone with respect. Use courtesy and have patience when dealing with people, and do not flame or bash anyone. This means tolerance, too. Everyone has a right to their own opinions and beliefs. Any positive ("__ is great!") or neutral ("I think __.") opinions including religion and politics may be mentioned and discussed, but should not be debated; should an argument break out, try to agree to disagree or take it to private chat. We understand conflicts do still happen, but if you do clash with someone, keep it out of public eye. If it becomes too great a problem or is something that really needs to be decided one way or another, try asking a staff member to be a mediator.
- Content Guidelines
Vicious Circle is rated PG-13. This means both that you are not to post anything exceeding that rating and that you should not join if you are offended by mildly mature content. "Swearing" is fine so long as you aren't just making a point to abuse that right. If someone has a good reason to dislike (a) specific word(s), we ask you respect it, and in private chat we ask you to cater to your conversation partner's wishes. In public, however, "zomg bad words D:" is not a good reason and so long as someone isn't making a point to "swear" for the SAKE of doing so we endorse full freedom of expression.
Vulgar subjects (dead baby jokes/making light of tragedies/etc) should be avoided however. Please do not spam. Advertising should only be done in the advertising board, though we don't care if you mention another board in chat. ("Yeah I came from there" or "Once on this one board I had this character do this" are cool. If someone ASKS FOR a link you may oblige as well. "Hey join my site!!" will not be permitted, though. Offenders will be warned twice before being banned from the box temporarily.) Naturally, no illegal content is permitted (pornography, ROMs, hacks, etc).
- One Account
Only one account per member, please. It just makes it easier to keep track of who is who if all the characters are listed under one name. Also, we don't like the idea of falsely inflating our member count. ;P If you'd like to use your character's name, you may, but it is neither required nor too common here.
(Also, don't be confused if at any point you've noticed a major pattern in names among members. xP This is in no way due to any requirements; we sometimes just do things for a while for lulz. You can always use whatever account or display name you want, assuming it's not inappropriate.)
- Activity Policy
As stated in our welcome box, we are both highly active and very casual. Mod replies are quick, but we still understand people have lives. As such, we will never have activity checks or delete inactive accounts; why would we discourage you from deciding to come back some day, after all? All we ask is you do post occasionally, and let us know if you'll be on hiatus for a while. :3
- Show Effort
Whether it's roleplaying, making a character, or just chatting in the box, be sure to put a little effort into everything you do. We are intermediate-advanced, so please do your best to use proper spelling and grammar; this goes double for characters and RP. Casual grammar (like starting sentences with and) is one thing, and completely fine; a total disregard is another. Wondering how something works? Look around! Our staff are very friendly and always more than happy to answer your questions, but often the answer is right there if you'll take the time to look~ ^^
- Have Fun!
Most importantly, have fun! Roleplaying should never be stressful or feel like a chore. If you start to feel like it is, feel free to take some time to relax. Maybe chill in the chatbox for a while or even take a break for a few days and let your muse build back up. :3 We care a lot more about member happiness than our total post count, and we'll still be here when you're feeling back up to par~

The Era region is the northern-most province in the pokemon world. It is possibly one of the oldest regions with a history stretching back further than any of the historians could ever dream to record. As far as memory serves, there had always been the Era dynasty in control of the region. It no longer was just a region, it was a large kingdom. The dynasty ruled for many generations, creating settlements and keeping the peace within the kingdom. Nobles were appointed to rule over certain territories under the monarch. Era was generally very rich for it boasted a plentiful diamond mine and a popular yearly competition. Era entered an age of industrialization when cities popped up and new technologies were either born or imported.
All was well.
Then King Nolan took the throne. No one had an opinion regarding him until a particularly devastating winter. People struggled, but managed to survive the freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, when the ground thawed they found that the diamond mines no longer provided diamonds. This disaster left many people poverty-stricken and only the royals remained wealthy. The king was unsympathetic to any crisis other than the one in his own pocket. He forced the citizens of Era to pay harsh taxes with money they didn't have. Catching Pokemon became illegal because Nolan saw every wild pokemon as his property. Tourists stopped coming to Era as a result of steep tolls Nolan charged to enter and leave the kingdom.
People grew increasingly irate with the situation and they readily expressed it. There were mobs and riots everywhere filled with angry citizens. Eventually King Nolan was poisoned and found dead. Some whisper that he is still alive but most people debunk this as a rumor.
Queen Alice replaced her cousin as the monarch, but her reign didn't last long. She wasn't queen for a month before there was an uprising. The rebel army gathered at the castle's gates and infiltrated the fortress. There was no one left to protect the royal family and they were either captured or killed on the spot with the exception of a few that escaped. The castle was looted and left in ruin with flames waving from the windows.
Today, the kingdom is divided.
The nobles saw their opportunity to take power for themselves, however they all want the throne and none are willing to compromise. They are building large armies to fight each other. The nobles at all points on the compass are at war.
Meanwhile the rebel army is also growing and fighting the nobles to keep them from power. They are the force that took down the royalty in the first place, but they are unsure of the government they want now. There is no real leader to take control and steer them toward a common goal.
Gangs of many kinds have also sprung up, hungry for land and fortune. They are fierce rivals of each other and stake their claims on territory by placing their mark. Evidence of their existence can be found in the large cities of Era. Most of the gang members are thieves that are desperate for cash, others just had personal vendettas against members of other gangs.
The group which stays most under the radar are the loyalists who seek to find the remaining members of the royal family and have them end the chaos. They mostly stifle their opinions for fear of being killed by any of the numerous radical rebels in the region.
Era is a lawless land now, with no government and nothing to keep people from stealing and killing all they want. Havoc and destruction is everywhere, with only facades of normalcy remaining. Pokemon training is still the major occupation. However, there are no gyms in Era and no pokemon league so people raise pokemon for different purposes. They might want stronger pokemon for political reasons: to ensure they have the stronger army. Despite the current state of things, the citizens of Era are adamant that there must be a pokemon tournament as with every year. Trainers are preparing to enter that prestigious and famous competition.
You are being asked to pick a side, and now is the time.
